Acupuncture is a traditional technique that has been used to treat a variety of symptoms from headaches to digestive issues.  It has also been proven effective in the treatment of addiction, depression, anxiety, IBS, infertility, insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, sciatica, stress, and much more.   Acupuncture is also very effective for natural pain management.  The great thing about acupuncture is that it is a very effective and well researched tool to treat a variety of conditions without the use of medication.

There are two types of acupuncture that a naturopathic doctor can use.  The first is Traditional Chinese Medicine which is based on the principle of Yin and Yang.  Yang helps stimulate the body whereas yin calms it down.  In essence, we can understand the yin and yang as a way of balancing the nervous system.  Thin needles are carefully placed in specific spots which help to calm down or stimulate the fight or flight mode (sympathetic nervous system) or support the rest and digest mode (parasympathetic nervous system).   By balancing the nervous system the body will respond with hormonal changes, better organ functioning, while supporting the mood.   As the nervous system has a large impact on the majority of the body, acupuncture is a great treatment for many conditions.

The other type of acupuncture used is for pain management which focuses on tight muscles and joint pain.  This style is sometimes called dry needling and is similar to traditional acupuncture but with a limited focus.  The style is focused on releasing points of tension in tight muscles or reducing pain with a weak electrical current called electro-stim.

What makes us different

As a Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Steyr uses acupuncture and cupping as part of his overall treatment plan.  When acupuncture is combined with research based medicine for nutrition and herbal products we see better results.  For example herbs to reduce inflammation or support hormonal health can be part of the overall treatment plan.   Plus, as a naturopath, Dr. Steyr can order lab tests and integrate conventional medicine.  With this style, the goal is to go beyond just feeling better, and have people live a vibrant life full of energy and optimal health.
